Following on from my last article about phantom hitchhikers and road ghosts across the Halsall Moss area of West Lancashire and Merseyside, readers with an interest in this sort of thing might like to know that I have an article appearing in the September 2017 issue of the magazine Fortean Times on a similar theme. But this time the focus is on motorcycles!

My research on this topic started when the magazine passed on to me a letter from someone who had read my article The Old Man of Halsall Moss. He stated that he had had this type of experience when he travelled along the A6 down into Stockport town centre one night, and stopped to give a lift to a woman in motorcycle leathers who was thumbing a lift. She then disappeared, although he simply assumed that she had moved away into the shadows; possibly because she was expecting a lift off someone specific and had stopped him by mistake. It was a few years later when he was reading a book about local ghosts (viz. Supernatural Stockport) that he saw that where he stopped was supposed to be the haunt of The Black Rider – a girl in motorcycle leathers who hitches a lift to her home in Hazel Grove off passing motorcyclists, and then disappears! Upon enquiry at her home the elderly couple tell the motorcyclist that he must have picked up the ghost of their daughter who had died in a motorcycle accident five years previously. They said many young men had had the same experience…..

…and stopped to give a lift to a woman

Don’t forget, if you are interested in these types of phenomena, I am giving my presentation about The Old Man of Halsall Moss to raise money for Wirral Hospice St John’s on the evening of Wednesday 25th October 2017 in the OC Club in Bromborough on the Wirral. Watch this website and St John’s own website for details.

If any readers have had their own strange or inexplicable first-hand (or second-hand experience) then please get in touch through this website and let me know the details. In particular, I would welcome any first or second-hand experiences in relation to a female phantom hitchhiker who is said to haunt the road from Spital through Dibbinsdale to Bromborough, on the Wirral.
